In Europe, Digital Radio Broadcast (DAB) was adopted in many countries as early as 20 years ago, most notably in the United Kingdom where it has enjoyed great success. Most consumers liked the ease of use and the extra value-added enhancements offered by DAB. More recently, digital-only services made the decision to buy a DAB digital radio even easier.
In 2011, many countries decided to adopt DAB+, which has a similar technical framework for digital radio—the Eureka-147 transmission standard—with one major difference in terms of the audio-encoding algorithm. DAB uses the MPEG1-Layer II algorithm, which was cutting edge when DAB was first introduced. Over the years, many other psychoacoustic algorithms have emerged, such as high-efficiency advanced audio coding (HE-AAC), which is considered one of the best. DAB+ uses HE-AAC versions 1 and 2. This allows for very efficient use of the spectrum, something that is becoming increasingly rare. With DAB+, very high-quality audio is achievable at lower bit rates.
Digital radio broadcasting and communication as the core of digital conversion require a new generation of products, which are called Communication and Broadcasting Integration SoC (CBI System on Chip).
BCD Atlantik Offerings
BCD Atlantik offers digital radio SoCs and solutions from PnpNetwork, a fabless semiconductor company. Since its foundation in 2000, PnpNetwork has designed and developed demodulation chips specifically for the European Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting System and shipped them to customers worldwide.
The development and mass production of the demodulation chips for automotive digital broadcasting have enabled PnpNetwork to become a leader in the field.
